NHS MMR Vaccination

The number of measles cases is increasing in Greater Manchester.

With measles cases on the rise in Greater Manchester, we’re taking action to combat the spread of this highly infectious disease.

Measles is a serious threat, with just one infected individual capable of spreading it to around 15 unvaccinated individuals. Its transmission is particularly easy in environments like nurseries, schools, and universities.

The consequences of contracting measles can be severe, leading to life-altering issues such as blindness, deafness, and encephalitis (brain swelling). Certain groups, such as infants, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems, face an increased risk of complications.

While there’s no specific treatment for measles, receiving two doses of the MMR vaccine provides effective lifelong protection against the disease’s serious effects.

Although the MMR vaccine isn’t recommended during pregnancy, it’s safe to receive shortly after giving birth, even while breastfeeding.
