Period Pain
Period Pain is a common and natural part of the menstrual cycle, affecting most women at some point in their lives. It’s typically experienced as painful muscle cramps in the tummy, which can radiate to the back and thighs. The intensity of the pain can vary from mild, constant discomfort to intense, sharp spasms, and can change with each period. Some cycles cause little to no pain, while others can be extremely painful.
Pelvic pain can also occur outside of your period and may signal that your period is approaching soon. This type of pain occurs when the muscular wall of the womb contracts, which is a normal part of the menstrual process. These contractions help shed the womb lining, but they also compress blood vessels, cutting off the oxygen supply to the womb. This lack of oxygen triggers chemicals that cause pain.
For many women, period pain begins with the start of their period, although it can start a few days before. The discomfort typically lasts 48 to 72 hours, but for some, it may persist longer, often being most intense when bleeding is heaviest.
